Outlook requires Outlook Express 4.01

Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Outlook requires Microsoft Outlook Express 4.01 or greater. You can install Outlook Express by running Add/Remove Programs from the Control Panel. You could try searching Microsoft's knowledge-base, only to find the solutions apply to Windows 2000. And Outlook Express is installed and running just fine and you're running Windows XP! So, what to do? Read on for some resolutions to this issue.

Instructions

Click Start>Run>type regedit and hit Enter. Navigate to the following registry key:  

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{44BBAB40-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}.

Highlight the registry key and then locate the REG_DWORD values is Installed under Microsoft Outlook Express 6 and Mail News. If either of the values are set to 0, change them to 1. To do this, right click on the REG_DWORD values and select Modify. In the Value Data form field, enter 1 and click OK. Close out regedit and start Outlook.

Download POP3 or IMAP mailboxes (including SSL) to Exchange Server.

But wait! I have the registry key {44BBAB40-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}but it's in a folder called AutorunsDisabled listed at the bottom of Installed Components. Good; this step applies to you then. Download and install the program Autoruns listed in the resources section (or if you ran Autoruns, run it again).

Locate the file Autoruns.zip. Right-click the file and then click "Extract All..." and save the file in the default location. Click the "Extract" button. The Autoruns folder opens. Double-click Autoruns.exe. Click "Run." Now, locate the registry key mentioned in Step 1. Place a check next to each entry of Outlook. Close out of Autoruns and double-click on your Outlook icon to start Outlook.

Double-click "scanpst.exe." Click the "Browse" button and navigate to "c:\users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook." Double-click "archive.pst."

Click "Start." The utility scans your archived PST file and reports any errors or corruption in the file.

Click "Make Backup of Scanned File Before Repairing" if the Scanpst program finds errors. Click "Repair." 

 Close the confirmation window when the repair is finished.

msn error code 0x80004005

If you have a yellow triangle on your inbox, Double clicking the triangle shows an error code 0x80004005.



Please try the following steps:  

Windows Vista/Windows 7

Note: Sign out from MSN then close the program before performing the steps below.

1. Click ‘Start’
2. In the Search box, type the following: %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\MSN
3. Press the ENTER key. (The MSN folder will open)
4. In the MSN folder, do the following:
a. Click ‘Organize’, ‘Folder and Search options’, then ‘View’
b. put a dot on ‘Show hidden files and folders’
c. Uncheck the ‘Hide extensions for known file types’ and ‘Hide protected operating system files options’
d. Click ‘Apply’, then ‘OK’
The db30 folder will appear inside the MSN folder.
5. Open the db30 folder then look for files that end as msn-com.sdf and msn-com_JMF.sdf
6. Right-click, choose ‘Rename’ and add .old after .sdf to both these files
7. Close the db30 folder

This error generally comes up when your firewall block any port. Reconfigure your account to Live Mail and also make sure that your firewall is not blocking any ports that are needed.

Reconfigure a non-Windows Live Hotmail account in Windows Live Mail:

Check if all your messages are available on your account's Web interface. If not, you may back-up your messages in Windows Live Mail.

Remove your account:

a. Right click on the account as displayed on the folder pane.
b. Click Remove account.
c. Confirm the action by clicking yes.
3. Add the account back following the steps below.

Configure a non-Windows Live Hotmail account in Windows Live Mail:

1. For 2011 version of Windows Live Mail, go to Account tab in the ribbon menu then click Email. For 2009 version of Windows Live Mail, click the Add e-mail account link on the lower left corner of the screen.
2. Type your e-mail address, password, and display name on their respective boxes and then click next.

If Windows Live Mail cannot detect your account's settings, you have to manually configure your account and fill out the Incoming Server Information and Outgoing Server Information sections for your e-mail account. You may need to contact your ISP to find out some or all of the following information about your account:

The type of e-mail server that you use (POP3, IMAP, or HTTP).
The name and details of your incoming e-mail server.

Salary Thieves

Yesterday I attended a Waterloo Agile Lean session on Story Mapping presented by Mark Levison. I had heard of Story Mapping but hadn't worked through it before. I liked the hands-on exercises approach Mark took to help us understand the process and benefits of that technique. This blog post is not about Story Mapping.

I love learning and take any opportunity I can to hear different speakers present on topics that I think may be of value. Sometimes I even attend the same talks and workshops when they are done by different speakers so that I can understand differences of style in presentation, stories, and tips/techniques for getting the ideas across to the audience/participants. Once I even attended the same topic by the same speaker 2 days in a row, and I learned something new/different the second time around! (It was a Cem Kaner talk when he was in our area a few years ago.)

Yes, I gained an appreciation of Story Mapping yesterday. More importantly, I learned a new anecdote from the speaker - one that got me thinking. At one point, Mark answered a question about managing a large backlog on a Scrum/Kanban-style (information radiator) board. The problem with really large backlogs of stuff to do (likely anything with more than 100 items in it), is that the items near the bottom become meaningless over time. You will probably never get to them because something more important always comes up.

Mark told us a quick story about Taiichi Ohno, the father of Lean Manufacturing. I looked up the story and found a reference to it here. In 1984, Ohno was interviewed about the history of development of the Toyota Production System (which later became Lean Manufacturing). At one point in the interview that discussed work standards and the early stages of doing kaizen (continuous improvements), Ohno said:

I tasked the shop floor leaders with regular kaizen of work methods and revision of the standard work, telling them "If the kanbans do not change for one month you are salary thieves."

During Mark's workshop yesterday, he mentioned the "yellowing of paper" [on the backlogs] as an indicator of "salary thieves." He was tying this point back to the question: how long has an item been sitting on your backlog? Maybe they are salary thieves.

This is an interesting point. When I work with Testing teams, I sometimes hear the right words but see the wrong practices.

For example, I often hear testers talking about Risks. That's good. They do a risk assessment and create tests for those risks but never revisit the risks. That's bad. Over time, those original risks become salary thieves. Are they still relevant? Have things changed? Are you wasting your time to put effort into managing the testing of things that are so out of date that not even the developers/programmers use them to create the code you are now testing?

What about test cases? And Regression Testing? How many of those tests check risks and ideas that are no longer relevant? How many of them are salary thieves, taking away our precious time that we could have spent finding more relevant bugs and identifying new risks to stakeholder value?

What about the tools that we use to support and manage our work? How many of them have sunset clauses tied to the creation dates of artefacts? For example, automatically identifying requirements in a backlog, test cases in a repository, or personas in a reference area that are "old" (by some definition) and therefore potential risks of losing value.

Right. I don't know any software development tools that do this right now. It seems like a perfectly reasonable feature to look for though.

When we think about the "dinky" Scrum/Kanban board with pieces of paper identifying bits of work, we realise that ageing has a very real effect on paper. We see the paper get old over time, the ink start to fade. If we have to rewrite a card or sticky note, we should be asking: what is the value of keeping it on the board at all?

With electronic tools, things are a bit different. Electrons, unfortunately, don't show signs of wear over time. Unless we specifically ask a computer to keep track of information like this, we are likely to forget about it because of all the other things we have to do and keep track of.
